One moved...one to go....doing things twice sucks....even if it is pumpkin related...and yes that is a shadow of a tree...so I know there will be no wr on that plant, she'll likely be the local fall fair fruit.... And look what showed up in the new patch....

BOOYAH!!!!

Saturday, April 25 View Page
This is what's keeping me busy while waiting....... Mushroom compost arrived last night, mixed composted manure today.... I have quite a bit to add to the new area, the existing patch was in pretty good shape according to sample results, so will not require as much...... Thanks go out to John Vincent for helping me with the analysis results...
Sunday, April 26 View Page
Everything looking good...500 Northrup and 993.2 Vincent-McGill both pushing dirt Both my 307's are first up.... my patch is likely to expand again this week as I have enough manure, and I would love to see what my seed throw's out...
Sunday, April 26 View Page
Garlic is looking good as well......
Tuesday, April 28 View Page
Monday was a busy day...decided to book the day off and work in the patch....weather was perfect, plants went out for a little real sun...tilled the new area for my 307, got a bunch of worms from a neighbor in exchange for some compost, good trade! Moved the rest of the mushroom compost and tilled......a great day all around. This shot is before adding anything to the 'newest' new area...
Tuesday, April 28 View Page
Tuesday it rained....so working was okay.... by the time I got home it cleared, and I started moving the composted manure, got several yards in the patch, spread, and got the final planting mix ready for one of my hoophouses and then put on the plastic. One done, one more tomorrow, plus the new hoophouse for my 307... without heat cable. This one will not be the same as the first two, a little more simplistic....all plants are doing okay.... I'm thinking the 500 Northrup will go in first, likely Thursday....

And it is with great sadness that I must tell you of the passing of our family pet...she was a gentle giant who loved to chase shadows and was a great companion and friend and will be dearly missed. Jewel was a beautiful Bouvier who gave us 11 wonderful years, but was suffering with a sore front left leg and lung cancer. On Saturday May 2nd she decided to chase the neighbors cat and did serious damage to her left front leg. We had no choice but to put her down......but not before I gave her a whole ring of fresh Kolbasa..... RIP my sweet Jewel....

The Garlic...however...is not doing so good....watching your garlic die, and have no organic method of controlling bulb and stem nematode...is heartbreaking.... There is an organic product available from Virgina, but they do not have approval to ship to Canada yet...it is $90/gallon, but would be worth it to me, if I could get my hands on some....somehow...... This one has great potential....but has to go....

500 Northrup.......in my 7x9 hoophouses.......almost at 4' on the main..with good 1' secondaries....nice leaf size...but I must address high nitrogen levels in the soil next year.....still looking okay for here in Ontario....
Saturday, June 6 View Page
993 Vincent-McGill.....ahead of the Northrup....just hit 4' on the main this morning...secondaries at 18"...... this one is growing the fastest at the moment...I have been working hard to try and keep the main and secondaries down......high nitrogen levels are keeping them......UP.... Good Growing to you all..... Cheers.......GO GVGO....

Looks like we have a good stretch of weather coming...finally...as the plants are pushing the limits of the hoophouses..... Here is photo of myself on the right and my best friend Andrew who passed away suddenly last week... Andrew Peter Mark Myhal October 28 1960 - June 13 2009 You will be sorely missed my dear ukranian friend NASROVYA!!!

Here is the 500 Northrup...I lost the main to mother nature and my rookie mistake last Thursday..... I will dedicate this plant to my friend Andrew as the metaphor is ironic...the head of the plant is gone, like Andrew's family who lost a devoted and loving father. The secondary support will now take over and the family will be okay. The strength of Andrew's family is just like this plant........Resilient!!!
Monday, June 22 View Page
Here is my little 307....... I will dedicate this plant to Liam Finlayson .... who is the oldest brother of my daughters best friend. Liam tradgectly passed away 8 weeks ago at the very young age of 23, and we have been grieving his loss since. He was a gifted child, a kind and gentle young man with a sharp wit and a treasure trove of talent. May your soul rest in peace Liam.

Here is the 993 Vincent-McGill..... This plant I will dedicate to my good friend Cherry Spagnola... Cherry passed away suddenely on February 10th of this year in a tragic car accident. Cherry was only 45 and is survived by her husband Tony, 3 sons, and a grandson. Cherry was a free spirit who loved life and brought joy to the tmany many people she knew in her life. She will never be forgotten Cherry and is deeply missed...rest in peace sweet Cherry.

And finally, the whole patch will be overseen by the spirits of two amazing dogs who were both put down this year, our beloved Jewel and Charlie, my good friends Jack Russell... Keep the critters out you two.....
Monday, June 22 View Page
I have no more plants and have suffered enough this year with all these tragic losses. So back to the pumpkin growing season and hope and plants full of life. I find the patch very theraputic. I have pollinated the first female on the 993, 8 1/2 feet out, as a trial pollination. The male flowers came from Phil Hunt's 898 Knauss. I drove over at 5:00 am this morning to pick up two boys who were ready to go.

Patch Update.....Everything looking good after moving most of the dryer felts...worked perfectly at keeping the weeds away!! All plants have been pollinated...... 3 on "The Cherry Bomb" all by the 898 Knauss. First one was culled on Saturday 12 days, 30" circ. about 13 lbs. 2nd and 3rd pollinations look like they took, will likely cull the second and go with the third. "The Gift" was pollinated with the 993 Vincent-McGill. "The Uke" has three pollinations, the 898 Knauss, the 901 Hunt, and the 993 Vincent-McGill. I will pollinate one more with 898 Knauss tomorrow a little further out. Now deciding where everthing is going to grow to..... Cheers....
Wednesday, July 15 View Page
Weather has slowed down growth here in Ontario, just like some of the other growers in our province. Day 10 measurements basically suck. Here is a shot of the extreme measures taken after losing a pumpkin on "The Uke"......coon or skunk broke off the baby kin...even after being wrapped with bird netting...scratched two others....so I made up 5 of these......working good for early days after pollination....
Wednesday, July 15 View Page
Here is a shot of the same pumpkin on day 13....way behind last years measurements.......this is her new home for a little while... not taking any chances with them there critters....
Wednesday, July 15 View Page
I have not said much about the garlic situation...but now that I have started to harvest what I have ....I can say that my extreme measures to fight bulb and stem nematode was worth it.... I have learned a lot more about garlic pest this year...and will surely do way better next year....but for now.....not bad at all...I Have Fresh Garlic.....and not a moment too soon...just finishing off last years harvest.....now 3 years witout buing store bought.....Good Growing To You All.....
