Well Ian P has persuaded me to have ago at the big pumpkin and I must thank DAVE STELTS for the seed he as sent me, apparently its the Emerald of the Pumpkin genetics. My wisdom has been growing record onions which I have had the world record and bread the variety Ailsae that holds so many records. I will put some of that wisdom into growing the pumpkin and see what happens. I only have one chance as my polyhouse is only big enough for one plant, so here goes! sowing Sunday th April. I will keep you all informed at my progress

Today I planted my single Pumpkin plant , I sow 4 seed 1 x DAVE STELTS that seed failed unfortunately , the other 3 seeds were IAN PATON 1173 X Stelts , 2 came through so I have picked the best plant. I only have a Polyhouse that measures 6 meters by 6.5 meters so its just one plant. one chance! It looks rather pathetic there on its own but who knows! Anyway Ian assures me its the Frankel of Pumpkin Pedigree. I applied Vaminox Micorrhizal Inoculant all over the soil and work it in. The plant is in a double glazed tent which has small fan heater set at 16c.

The Paton 1173 has grown very large leafs, 'Ian Pumpkin Paton' tells me that's good. Its has started to run too, I still have the small tent over the plants as we have had 5 weeks of no more than 9c here on the coast of North Yorkshire.

Onions are doing fine but here on the North coast of Yorkshire we have had nearly 5 weeks of no more than 9c temps! its very hard for people to understand if they don't live here how cold it can be day and night. Its been the coldest April and May I can remember . I think they have enjoyed the CO2 as the vents have never been open so its not escaped!

The best of the onions are about 19.6 inches circumference so pretty pleased with that as its been so cold.

Here is the IAN PATON 1173 X Stelts It has been slow to take off but we are such a cold place here, it is starting to send out side shoots. I have been amazed at how fast the roots spread outwards from the main stem.

The Paton 1173 has I believe set a pumpkin that's about the size of a Jaffa Orange at the moment. Now the fun begins!

The Paton 1173 I am growing is now 14 inches across , it rooted near the pumpkins so I had cut the roots off so it has an unrestricted stem for when it get big! I hope! All other baby pumpkins refuses to set , this one was the very first so may be I am lucky.
