I did attempt to grow a bushel gourd this year. I grew a 470 Connolly. I had a very difficult time getting a seed to germinate this year which put me a couple weeks behind. Here is the winter cover crop of rapeseed flowering in the spring before it was cut and tilled in.
I learned the hard way that a new fungicide that I was using is also a growth regulator. I was preemptively applying Propiconazole to the soil to prevent soil borne diseases. My plant never grew and was stunted the whole year and couldnt figure out why. I finally pulled the plant in July. When I planted a cover crop after I pulled the plant the cover crop did not grow where the plant had been. This was the only area I had been treating with this new fungicide. I did some research and thats when I found out that its also a growth regulator.
I was able to rest the patch most of the year so hopefully it broke the disease cycle I was experiencing with a few pathogens. I did a summer cover crop of buckwheat and crimson clover. Then in August I tilled in that cover crop and planted a five way mix cover crop which should over winter. It has daikon radish in it. This is a new one for me.
I finally got the tiller for my lawn tractor hooked up. Ive had this for a few years but never attached it. I had been using a walk behind tiller which is on its last legs. I cant wait to till the patch with this in the Spring.
