Well this is the beginning of the growing season. I spent last week on vacation hunting and prepping my vegetable garden and new pumpkin patch. The new patch is 20X40 feet and is about as much room as I can give up right now. I live in a subdivision and I'm afraid the Homeowners Association will complain. I will sneak in a few more feet next year.
Tuesday, April 22 View Page
The vegetable garden will have allot more room for growing produce now that I have a place special for my pumpkins. With the prices in the grocery store, the more the better.

I ordered a 50lb bag of Irish Kelp from Wood Creek Farms today. Sam Lovelace suggested it this year at the Southern Growers Meeting. I will give it a try.

I have never started seed in the house before. Today I started my experimental run with a 877 Gregoire, 961 Blalock and 962 Kent. I'm using Fafard Organic Potting Soil, 1 gallon pots and a 250w heat lamp which I have mounted way above the pots to keep them from getting to hot. I will use a timer to turn the light off for 8 hours at night. The seeds have been filed and are now soaking in a very diluted solution of Miracle Grow. I will let them soak for 4 hours before putting them into the soil.

Got my page of kelp in today. Smells yummy, I want to go the beach now.

48 hours now and no sign of growth from my starts, maybe when I get home from work in the mornining.
Thursday, April 24 View Page
Looked at my Diary, what a goof ball, that's a bag not a page of Kelp. TeeHee
Friday, April 25 View Page
I got home from work this morning and found that the soil on the 877 Gregoire, and 962 Kent has lifted a little but nothing so far on the 961 Blalock. It seems there is life under that soil and my method of starting this years seed will probably work. I am so tempted to peak but I don't want to damage the plants. If I don't see green by tomorrow I will dig one up to satisfy my curiosity. Why not these are test subjects anyway Right?
Friday, April 25 View Page
I woke up this afternoon and found that the 962 Kent has broken through. I'm so excited I could dance.

962 Kent breaking ground with seed cot still attached, I will keep and eye on this to see if it sheds.

The 877 Gregoire broke ground this morning and all looks good
Saturday, April 26 View Page
still nothing on the 961 Blalock
Saturday, April 26 View Page
The 962 Kent still has the seed cot attached and its an inch above the ground. I'm afraid it will damage the plant, I'm going to remove it.
Saturday, April 26 View Page
I removed the seed cot from the 962 Kent with two pairs of tweezers after dampening it with warm water. It came off with ease, I'm sure no damage to the plant.
Saturday, April 26 View Page
Started two seeds, Filed and Soaked them for four hours in a light solution of miricle grow. Into the soil and under the light and on the heating pad at 4:00 pm.
Sunday, April 27 View Page
The plants are starting to get a little leggy. I'm going to move them outside during the day for some real sunlight.
Sunday, April 27 View Page
still nothing on the 961 Blalock, who knows what happened, I still may dig it up later.

The weather according to weather.com was supposed to be high of 70's lows in the 50's through May 5th which is my schedualed planting day. Last night we had snow in the higher elevations of the mountains and down here in the valley it's in the 30's. You got to love the unpredictable weather of the Appalachian mountains. When I left the house today for work there had been no movement on the new starts. We will see what It looks like tonight.

Here is a picture today of the 962 Kent. This is the hardiest little plant I have ever seen. It just wants to grow and grow. I was going to grow the 1054 Kent however the 962 Kent is growing so good it has made my lineup instead.
Tuesday, April 29 View Page
Got home today and checked the 1178 Lovelace and 1054 Jutras that I started Saturday. They ground is pushing up above the 1178 Lovelace, still not sure about the 1054 Jutras. I should see green tomorrow morning.
Tuesday, April 29 View Page
I only have room for two plants in my bed so the decision has finally been made. I am going to grow the 1178 Lovelace and 962 Kent I decided this because both plants have proven to be hardy here in the deep south. The 1054 Jutras will remain a backup plant and the 877 Gregoire is going to be a gift to my friend Jeff and his daughters to plant.

The 1178 Lovelace is out of the ground!
Wednesday, April 30 View Page
Last night the record low of 35 degrees set back in 1978 was broken with a low of 31. The local weather lady said this will be the end of it. I hope so.
Wednesday, April 30 View Page
The 1054 Jutras is finally showing signs of life. It should break ground tomorrow.

The 1054 Jutras is out of the ground, hurray for me.
Thursday, May 1 View Page
Here are my babies. It was so much fun starting my plants like this. Up until now I just put a seed in the ground and watched the little buggers pop up. This was allot more pleasurable for me. I think other plants in my garden will be started like this just so that I can keep a close eye on all the action.
Sunday, May 4 View Page
Called my partner Gail Newsom today and picked his brain about digging a pit for my plants. I have heard so many opinions. I decided that since this is a new patch, and I haven't had much time to amend my soil much, that I will at least dig nice pits. I understand the thought of treating your whole patch as a planting hole, but for now time and money are against me.
Monday, May 5 View Page
Today the plants look great and are begging to be planted. I don't want to disappoint them. Everything is a go.
Monday, May 5 View Page
So today I tilled in 10lbs of kelp meal and 500lbs of Black Kow composted manure across my entire patch. Then I dug two pits 4X4 ft and 20 inches deep. I dumped two cubic feet of Miracle Grow potting soil, a fifty pound bag of cow manure and a dash of kelp meal. All this was mixed together with an equal amount of soil from my bed. The planting wholes are now slightly elevated from the rest of the patch.

This photo was on last years diary, but I just had to post it again. The kids help allot in the garden and they where so proud of there crop last year. If they dig the hole or drop the seed there name goes on the plant. With that they also get special recognition for anything it produces.

Friday, May 23 View Page
The cot leaves are turning yellow and dieing off. This has been happening for about 10 days. I hope this is normal. The leaf size is pretty small also. The plant is pretty health other wise.
Friday, May 23 View Page
The plant I put on the last post was the 962 Kent, I forgot to mention that. Here is another picture of the 962 Kent for perspective on the leaf size.
Friday, May 23 View Page
The 1178 Lovelace is growing strong and should start to vine soon.
Friday, May 23 View Page
I don't know what's causing the yellowing on the leaf edge of the 1178 Lovelace. I think it may have to do with the recent warm spell.
Monday, May 26 View Page
Fertilized again today with another soil drench of seaweed (0-0-1) and starter fertilizer (4-12-4). My plan was to switch next week to Calcium Nitrate and Fish/Seaweed fertilizer, I'm not sure the plant is ready yet. I may continue for one more week with the current application.

I love to grow anything, Red hot Pokers are my favorite flower and these are coming in nicely.
Saturday, May 31 View Page
The 962 Kent is still not growing as fast as I would like to see it. I decided today to plant the 1054 Jutras I've been holding on to. I have planted it just behind the 962 Kent. I will watch them for another week and decide which on to keep.
Saturday, May 31 View Page
The 1178 Lovelace still growing strong, looks like it is starting to vine. Nice large leaves with no more yellow spots developing. Looks like the problem was low nitrogen release due to the cool weather.
Monday, June 2 View Page
Applied the final soil drench of seaweed (0-0-1) and starter fertilizer (4-12-4). Next week I will switch to Calcium Nitrate and Fish/Seaweed fertilizer. I also treated my plants today with Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control Concentrate (Imidacloprid: 1.47%)

the 1054 Jutras is suffering the same as the 962 Kent did growing in this spot before I pulled it. There has to be a serious Nitrogen deficiency in the soul here. I added a good amount of granular 10-10-10 and the leaf is starting to rebound.
Thursday, June 26 View Page
The 1054 Jutras is getting some good blooms. If the plant does not come back strong enough to grow a fruit at least I can get some pollen off of it.

Had a bad storm today and the plants really took a betting. I did my best to fix things up. Anxious to see if everything rebounds OK in a few days.
Sunday, June 29 View Page
The Lovelace rebound from the storm pretty good with just a little leaf damage. The Jutras is finally starting to grow, however probably a little late to grow anything on it. I'm going to use it as a pollinator for the Lovelace. If it has an open pollination I will let it grow and see what happens.

Started seeing new batch of spotted cucumber beetles on the leaves so I retreated the plants with Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control Concentrate (Imidacloprid: 1.47%. Problem fixed!

I have never hand pollinated before and have no Idea when the flowers are going to open. I called Chris Kent last night and picked his ear about my problem. He gave me some good advice but when woke this morning I found that I had missed my first chance to pollinate. Now I have an open pollination 10 foot out on the main vine of the Lovelace (1178 Lovelace x Open 6/30/08)
Tuesday, July 1 View Page
For experimental purposes I was able to pollinate one female on the first side vine on the west side of the patch (1178 Lovelace X 1054 Jutras 7/01/08). This will be cut off if I get a good one on the main vine. I also have an open pollination on the East side first side vine (1178 Lovelace X Open 7/01/08)

I have started to train the vine around this one and terminated the end of the main vine 10 foot out from this baby.

Could this spell the end for the 1178 Lovelace? I only gained 6 lbs over the last two days. While inspecting the fruit I found a two inch long stem end split. I hadn't checked for splits in awhile so this could be an old on. It was very dry and relatively small. I think it may have been there long enough to start healing without me. Here is the local forcast In western NC, an area between Jackson and Buncombe Counties as a predicted bull's-eye to expect as much as 6 to 8 inches over the next 2 days. River flooding is predicted in some areas of Western NC and flash flooding can occur most anywhere. NCDENR has also advised of a high potential for landslides within the affected areas of western NC due to the extreme drought conditions that have left the ground vulnerable to movement during these kind of events.

Things are growing very slowly, but at least it's still growing. It has been interesting to watch the traffic flow in front of the house since uncovering the fruit. I live on a cul-de-sac and every couple hours or so someone is turning around at the end of the drive and hanging there heads out the window to ogle. I have heard some talking about using other methods for shading and not liking the hassle of building a structure over there pumpkins. With all the traffic I've had, I'm glad it was hidden all this time.
