I finally know which 2 plants I am going to grow this year. The 1502 Wallace and the 1689 Jutras. A BIG Thanks to Ron & Pap Wallace and Joe Jutras. Good Luck in 2008!

My 2 back-up plants are going to be the 1352 Jutras 2007 and the 1310.5 Macari 2005.

I filed and started soaking my 1502 Wallace and 1689 Jutras tonight. I will soak them for 12 hours in a 75% water and 25% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.

After 12 hours of soaking the seeds, I planted the 1502 Wallace and 1689 Jutras in a 5 inch peat pot and place them in my state of the are germination station.

1502 Wallace has broken the surface and 1689 Wallace is just starting to push up.

The 1502 on the left and the 1689 on the right have been moved to bigger pots 4 days after planting. Looking Good!

The first true leaves on both the 1502 and 1689 are coming along great! The 1502 looks a little stronger right now, but I am glad to have both looking great. I hope to get them out of the pots and into the ground by the weekend.

Here is my little helper. He wanted to water the "Punkin Patch". This is the 1225.3 Pukos that I am starting for my cousin.

The 1502 Wallace, on the bottom, and the 1689 Jutras, on the top, are finally in the patch.

Here is the 1502 Wallace one week after planting in the patch. It has been very rainy and lower to mid 40's each night. I need some sunshine to help it grow!

Here is the 1689 Jutras one week after planting in the patch. It has a small tear in the first true leaf, but seems ok. C'mon sun!

1502 Wallace not looking very good. Any thoughts of what might be wrong?

1689 Jutras looking a little better than the 1502 Wallace, but still has me worried. Any suggestions?

Growth has been slow here in Ohio. The past few days have been warm and sunny during the day, but it dipped into the upper 30's this week. Warmer nights are coming next week.
Wednesday, June 4 View Page
The main seems to be a few days away from laying down on the 1502 Wallace, and the 1689 Jutras is a few days behind the 1502 Wallace. We just had a little over 3 inches of rain in 36 hours, but the weather is supposed to be sunny and 90 during the day and 70 at night for the next 2 days. Hopefully they will make big progress. More pictures to come soon.

Here is the 1502 Wallace chugging along. The main is down and running.
Sunday, June 8 View Page
The 1689 Jutras is looking good also. It seems to be 3 or 4 days behind the 1502 Wallace. Weather has been lower to mid 90's during the day and mid 70's at night. I tried to force the main down today, and I'm worried I might have pushed too far. There is a small bend in the vine, but nothing broke. Hopefully it can grow its way out of it.
Monday, June 9 View Page
I checked on the plants today, and the bend in the 1689 Jutras seemed to worsen a bit. I straightened it back out, supported it with bamboo sticks, and mounded dirt up around it. I'm really hoping this works! The 1502 Wallace is growing at a great pace!
Wednesday, June 11 View Page
I'm feeling better about the 1689 Jutras. I asked a couple of "Heavy Hitters" advice about what to do, and I followed their instructions. Thanks a million!
Sunday, June 15 View Page
This is the 1502 Wallace about 6 weeks after planting. It is coming along nicely, starting to shoot side vines out, and measuring almost 6.5 feet in length.
Sunday, June 15 View Page
This is the 1689 Jutras about 6 weeks after planting. It is coming along slower than the 1502 Wallace. The 1689 is a little over 4 feet in length, and the side vines are only about a foot in length. The weather has been good here in Ohio, so hopefully it will catch up to the 1502 Wallace.
Thursday, June 19 View Page
The 1502 Wallace is pushing 7.5 feet on the main, and 9 feet total on the first set of secondaries. There is a small femail at the tip of the main and at the tip of one of the secondaries. The 1689 is right around 5 feet on the main. The secondaries are not growing very quickly, but they are starting to show. More pitures to come this weekend.
Thursday, June 19 View Page
Apparantly I am a moron tonight, as on many other nights. I do know that female is not spelled femail, as I attempted to spell it in the previous post. I'm better at math than english.
Monday, June 23 View Page
The 1502 Wallace is looking strong at 8 feet on the main and 13 feet on the first set of secondaries. I'm hoping to have 10 feet on the main in 2 weeks. Females are starting to show up here and there. The 1689 Jutras is closing in on 6 feet on the main. The secondaries aren't growing very fast though. It does not seem as strong as the 1502, but still a healthy plant. There are a couple of females that have appeared.
Saturday, June 28 View Page
Here is the 1502 Wallace. It is measuring 11 feet on the main, with a female at 9 feet on the main. I would love for it to be further out, but I'll take it if I have to.

I pollinated my first pumpkin of the year on the 1502 Wallace. Unfortunately, there were no open males on the 1689 Jutras, so I had to self the 1502 Wallace(not that it is a bad thing). It is 7 feet out on the first set of secondaries. I plan to use this as a back-up, but you never know.

And here is the 1689 Jutras. It is measuring 8 feet on the main. There are a few females on the secondaries, but none on the main.
Sunday, June 29 View Page
I haven't posted about my 1352 Jutras plant yet(don't worry, I'm not sandbagging). It was a back-up plant, and I just couldn't throw it out, so I planted it in unamended soil. It is about 5-6 feet on the main. I was able to pick a male today, but no females on my 1502 or 1689 were open. The 1502 has one that might open at 9 feet on the main tomorrow, but it will be close. I put the 1352 male in the refrigerator, and I'm hoping to be able to pollinate tomorrow.

The 1502 x Self on the first side was a success. It is starting to grow, but still to soon to measure. I tried to pollinate the 1502 at 9 feet on the main with a 1689 male. It was the only male that was close to opening on the 1689, so I am hoping it was meant to be. We will see in the next few days if it takes.

I tried to pollinate the 1502 x 1689 on the other side vine today, also at about 7 feet out. I also pollinated the 1352 Jutras by the 1502 at 4.5 feet out. I am just going to try and have fun with the 1352 Jutras this year, and it is my front runner for the 2009 patch.

The last entry should have been dated for Tuesday, July 1st. Sorry.
Tuesday, July 8 View Page
The 1502 x Self is at 22.5 inches Circumference on Day 10, while the both 1502 x 1689 crosses were around 11 at day 8, and not growing well. I culled the two 1502 x 1689 crosses. I have a 1502 x 1352 Jutras that I pollinated yesterday on the main, and there is another female a few feet out from that. I am hoping on another chance at a 1502 x 1689. My wife and I went away for the 5th and most of the 6th, only to come home later on the 6th and see that a female about 9 feet out on the 1689 had been open pollinated. I'll keep an eye on it, but I want the 1689 x 1502 cross also. The 1352 female that I pollinated did not take. I pollinated another female today on the 1352 x 1689. We will see where it goes.
Thursday, July 10 View Page
Pollinated 1689 x 1502 this morning. It is at 10+' on the main. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one. I also pollinated the 1352 Jutras x 1689. The 1352 is just for fun, since it was a back-up.
Thursday, July 10 View Page
The 1502 x self on the first secondary is measuring 29.5" circumference on day 12. Not quite on pace for 1000 pounds, but it is only planned to be a back-up.
Friday, July 11 View Page
I was able to pollinate the 1502 x 1689 at almost 12' out on the main. If this one takes, as well as the 1689 x 1502 yesterday, it will have been a great couple of days!

I returned home from vacation to find a split in the 1502 Wallace x Self. I had to cull the pumpkin at 27 days, with an OTT of 85 pounds. The actual weight was 89.2 pounds. The good news is that there is a 1502 x 1689 that is growing well. The other bad news is that the two 1689 x 1502 pumpkins only made it to about softball size, and then aborted. There are however four 1689 x Open that are growing. I will probably let them grow since it is late in the season.
Sunday, July 27 View Page
After culling the 1502 x self, the 1502 x 1689 grew 8 pounds overnight. It is now measuring 121" OTT. Grow baby, Grow!

DISATER!!! The 1689 Jutras plant has taken a turn for the worse in a 24 hour span. The leaves turned yellow and brown and seem to be dying fast. I'm lost at what to do, other than cry, unless something turns that 1689 around.

DISATER in the previous post should be DISASTER. It's got me all shook up.
Wednesday, August 6 View Page
It's been a rough week. I lost the 1689 Jutras plant this past week, and the 1502 Wallace is following suit. I found a big hole in the main vine on the 1502 Wallace. I took the advice of a heavy hitter and cut the main from the damage, leaving me with about 5 feet of plant and just a couple of secondaries to grow from. The pumpkin has slowed to right around 7 pounds per day. Going to keep her going as long as we can.
Friday, August 15 View Page
The pumpkin on the 1502 has not grown for nearly 2 weeks, so I cut the pumpkin off of the remaining 5 feet of vine. Here is the final result for my 1502 x 1689 cross.
