Happy new year to everyone! My 2012 growing season has not got off to a very good start! This morning winds just about finished the skin off on my pumpkin tunnel!
Tuesday, January 3 View Page
And it also started to lift the skin out of the ground on the marrow tunnel! Got some sand around there a bit quick. Well at least things can only get better....

My line up for this year, 1634 Werner 1605 Sweet 1495 Stelts Three pumpkins this year, 750 ish sq ft per plant. No room for squash.

Got the new skin on the tunnel this week. :)

Started pumpkin seeds this morning.
Saturday, April 14 View Page
Ive had good luck germinating seeds this year with 100% germination. My line up at the moment looks as if its going to be 1495 1634 and 1381. Really happy with these three plants.
Saturday, April 14 View Page
After 8 days the 1634 wants out of its pot, will plant them out tomorrow.
Saturday, April 14 View Page
This year im going to plant my back up plants on the other end of each patch because i want to be able to leave them a little longer before i cull them. I only have space for three decent sized plants so want to make sure im going to have a decent plant in each spot.
Saturday, April 14 View Page
Ive made an extra vent up above the doors which im hoping will keep things cooler when it gets hot
Saturday, April 14 View Page
Over in the marrow tunnel i have some new potatoes coming along. Im planning on growing four marrows in here this year instead of three, 200 sq ft per plant 10ft x 20ft. Hopefully with a little less plant behind the marrow and reducing the water i give them they wont be quite as likely to split. My line up will be 206.5 and 206.5 progeny and ill start marrow seeds on the 8th of may like last year.

1495 Stelts plant, i thought this plant was developing in to a double vine but instead of having one second true leaf it has grown two. It looks as though it will grow to be normal, i think.

66 Baggs marrow, vines on three of my four plants are doing their best to go straight up in the air.

A female flower on the 1381, this vine is quite thick and brittle. Ive already put a small crack in it and havent even got any sort of bend on it yet.

Not had a great start with the marrows, 206.5 - started growing non marrows so pulled it. 66 - growing two now as one replaced the 206.5, both have no side vines for about the first three feet of vine but seem to be growing them now. 99.2 - main split 1/3 of the way through, it wanted to grow straight up in the air and split on the way down. 84 - no issues yet. 99.2 left, 84 right, and the two 66's at the back.
Saturday, June 9 View Page
The split. Im not terribly worried about this, im sure time ive got 15 feet of main vine rooted in before the marrow there should still be plenty of juice going up the vine to blow a bloody gert hole in the marrow lol.

and this, never had this happen before but i guess it must be related to my growing conditions as these plants are from three different seeds. pumpkins growing very slowly.

1495 pumpkin at day 11, not sure about the shape of this one either. All three pumpkins seem slow to get going this year.
Friday, July 6 View Page
I think its fair to say that these three never really took off lol
Friday, July 6 View Page
Last chance for the 1381 @ day 10. Its open pollenated as i wanted to ensure the best chance of a set as the time of year is going on
Friday, July 6 View Page
The 1634 is in the same boat being at day 10 and open pollenated. Not sure the 1495 has a fruit set yet, if it hasnt then it will get pulled as its run out of space and its too late to pollenate now anyways.

Well not a great season for me so far, this marrow is the best thing i have going at the moment. its 34 inches long and 27 days old and probally somewhere near 80 lbs i would think. It is growing on the only plant which didnt get problems with the vine tips curling up.
Tuesday, July 24 View Page
This one is about the same age and on the other 66 plant, the other marrow is on a 66 plant too. I dont care much for the shape of this one and it will probally split.
Tuesday, July 24 View Page
My only pumpkin at 27 days old i think, ive not put a tape on it yet. this is on the 1381. all other pumpkins aborted and i will pull the other two plants out when i get time.
Monday, July 30 View Page
66 Baggs marrow day 33, must be over 100 lbs now but has developed a stem split, it only goes in about an inch and i dont think its gone in to the cavity yet but it may do.
Monday, July 30 View Page
I hope it keeps going long enough to get some seeds from it but i also have another marrow about two weeks old further down the vine.
Monday, July 30 View Page
The other 66 at day 30, hate the shape of this one but it continues to grow. also has a small stem split which i dont think is terminal just yet but i have another marrow at about two weeks old on this plant also.
Wednesday, August 1 View Page
Well ive had better days! 106 DMG left 136.8 DMG right. Both grew from last years 66 seed. Both are too young to have any viable seeds inside.
Wednesday, August 1 View Page
My son persuaded me to take one of them in to "grannys house" she werent too impressed he he
Wednesday, August 1 View Page
The 1381 also seems to have split, dont know if its in to the cavity or not yet but its not looking good.
Sunday, August 12 View Page
ok, four marrows left. This one is 66x99 and is 41 inches long at day 29. Probally about 100 lbs.
Sunday, August 12 View Page
another 66x99 cross at 38 inches long and at day 27 probally around 80 pounds
Sunday, August 12 View Page
99xself at day 31 and 35 inches long and probally around 80 lbs. Has done well as ive not burried any vines on this plant and its on a side vine. Had issues with the tips of many of the vines growing double or twisting round on themselves.
Sunday, August 12 View Page
86.4x66 at day 33 and is 33 inches long and probally around 50-60 lbs. not grown as well as the others but it too is on a side vine with minimal vine burrying. Trying to play safe now and have stopped watering the marrows altogether. now if they split i will feel that i couldnt have done any more.
Sunday, August 19 View Page
127 dmg. split on a dill ring despite having no water for at least 10 days. 3 marrows left.
Sunday, August 19 View Page
Looked inside the splits of the pumpkin an it seems as though spiders have made it their home, must be dry inside :). I will inspect it properly before the first show and decide wether to get it weighed. Obviously id like to leave it for the XPG weigh off if i can.
Sunday, August 26 View Page
Well heres the pumpkin i forgot about. After this pumpkin split around the stem i gave up all hope because i thought it was finished, how wrong was i. The splits are not in to the cavity, yes they are deep but its all dried out nicely inside. Day 61 today 365 inches ott est 1019 lbs circ 156 inches est 872 lbs. too big for shepton mallet. lost another marrow yesterday. 2 marrows left
Sunday, August 26 View Page
The pumpkin which i forgot about. When i saw the splits around the stem about a month ago i gave up on this one, a bit of a mistake because they dont run in to the cavity and have dried up nicely. Of course watering has been continued but other than that this one has been on its own. Surprisingly even despite the worst summer i can ever remember this one tapes 365 inches ott estimating at 1019 lbs at day 61. Thats a pb estimate for me at day 61, however this one was set late and the condition of the plant is not great so it will slow down now i would think

Thursday, September 6 View Page
pumpkin now 388 ott est 1221 lbs at day 70 which sounds good
Thursday, September 6 View Page
but then i found a soft spot on the underside of the stem which is not so good. Im not sure wether or not this pumpkin is going to last. time will tell i guess.
Sunday, September 30 View Page
pumpkin still hanging on, 4 stem splits now and im not sure how deep they go inside. est around 1250 lbs ish and done growing.
