The patch is tilles and the cold frames were put up at the beginning of the week. seven spaces have been lined up for competition pumpkins and a eight small spot with extra space. also out of the patch the trellis has been placed for long gourds and another for water melon.

As an experiment to raise the soil temperature I placed 1 mil plastic on the growing area for the plants. After 2 days the soil temp was 11 deg F higher than the nearby soil. I'm hoping this will get the plants going a little faster since there is no other heat source in the cold frames.
Saturday, April 26 View Page
As for germinting the seeds a few changes has improved the results greatly. The new setup consists of a seed heating mat, themostat control, 4" cow pots and a black tray with clear cover. The sensor was placed in one of the pots and kept the temp at 85 deg f. All the seeds came up with nearly perfect cot leaves. In the past some of the leaves would be damaged by to hot or to cold temps.

The seedlings in 5" pots waiting to be planted in a week. A period of seasonably cold weather is predicted next week so they will stay in the greenhouse until then

I found a problem with my seedlings three of them have root maggots at the base. To save the seedlings from the maggots the soil was removed away from the stems exposing the top crown of the roots and a dose of triazide was used around the base of all seedlings.
Monday, May 5 View Page
It appears the root maggot problem is under control the pesticide killed many of them. The plants don't have any visible damage

The beetle were killed by the merit and seven so they are gone for the most part, just a few left. The heat did damage a few of the young leaves but nothing major. Now for the plant first up........
