A view of the new patch. My 2nd 286 Zaychkowsky wouldnt germinate so I went into the seed vault for a "lucky dog" seed to go in it's place. I chose 1054 Lawson 08 (364 Webster x 730 Dill) It just broke ground 2 days ago. Lineup this year is.. 322 Rahe 10, 1004 Mohr, 1054 Lawson, Beachy cross and a sib Beachy for pollen only.

322 Rahe. Vine is 13' long and the 1st pumpkin is at 11'. Looks like it will open in about 3 days. 2 more pumpkins between 11 and 13' so I am on schedule for a timely pollination. The 1004 Mohr has it's first pumpkin and right now it's green.

1004 Mohr plant. This is my #2 plant. I'm counting on this one if some disaster should befall my 322 Rahe plant.

This is how I protect my flowers for a controlled pollination
Friday, July 8 View Page
The pollinations I did on July 1st aborted
Friday, July 8 View Page
322 Rahe. I did 2 pollinations this morning. If 1 takes it would be optimum timing given the plant size and time of year.
Friday, July 8 View Page
I like the way the vine runners look like they are in a race.

# 10 Beachy 03. If you are looking for something pure from the 801 Stelts line this could be the one. This plant has surprized me for an 8 year old seed. Germination was 3 for 3 with no special treatment.

My 322 plant has developed a foaming stump. ARRGGGHH I also have 2 sets. The one on the main is a bit misshaped. The one on the secondary is a perfect shape and growing much faster but the stem has a small fissure on it. I hate making these choices. LOL
Friday, July 22 View Page
A picture of the foaming stump after surgery. A white mold extendended about 2' down the main. Good thing I opened it up. It would have completely rotted off.
Friday, July 22 View Page
Freakishly large stumps have freakishly large problems. LOL
Friday, July 22 View Page
A set at day 11 on the 322 Rahe plant. I lost all my pollinations on the main. So I am going with this one on a secondary.
Friday, July 22 View Page
Siamese pumpkins. I'll try to pollinate both just to see what happens.
Friday, July 22 View Page
I am still struggling to get one going on the 1004 Mohr. The heat is not helping. Using lots of coolers and ice packs
Monday, July 25 View Page
1004 Mohr. 4 vine nodes, 4 pumpkins. Iv'e pollinated about a dozen on this plant. I hope one takes. I used ice and a cooler on all of them.
Monday, July 25 View Page
Stump set up on the 322 Rahe. The pumpkin I had set has not grown between day 14 and day 15. Not good news. Cir 38.5" I have 1 left on a side vine. I hope it makes it. I was going to cull it a few days ago but didn't :)
Monday, July 25 View Page
#10 Beachy 2003. Did I say I liked this plant? Pollination on the main vine. Day 13 cir. 45.5" And look at the shape and color. Pure Stelts.
Wednesday, July 27 View Page
Day 15 estimated weight 58lbs. Not too bad for day 15. This is on the # 10 Beachy 2003. It's my second backup plant. My 322 Rahe has a foaming stump and 2 pumpkin sets that have stalled. I can't get one going on the 1004 Mohr. I guess it's the hot weather. The #10 Beachy gets late afternoon shade. Normally considered a bad thing, this year it probably saved this pumpkin from aborting.

This is my off the wall project for the year. Grown on my 322 Rahe. Both are pollinated with the # 10 Beachy. Under GPC rules the pumpkins vine must be trimmed to within 1" of the pumpkin stem. So would this considered 1 pumpkin ? LOL

322 Rahe. Big ugly rotten stump. Yuk

322 Rahe . Gummy stem blight ? Not good....

1004 Mohr. Yellow vine disease ? So much for a disease free new patch. I ditched about 2/3 of this plant today. Still hoping for a genetic cross on the part that doesnt look sick.

Now this affliction I understand. I drove my truck over it . LOL

Well only 1 of my siamese pumpkins took.

At this point, I really think these coolers would be more useful for beer ....

But wait. Not all is lost. My second backup the # 10 Beachy, a sleeper seed from 2003 has become the top performer for the year. Day 20 70" cir , 53" ete, 53" sts. 176" OTT. Est weight 126lbs. Now I just need a can of freakin magic to keep this baby going the distance. LOL....

# 10 Beachy day 25 est. 200 lbs. Pretty darn good for a day 25 back up plant. The next 2 weeks will tell the tale. The plant isn't the largest but it's in pretty good shape. Everything else has crashed and burned in disease. Even getting genetic crosses on them is in question now.
Thursday, August 11 View Page
Day 30 est. 275 lbs. Came home from work to find a blossom end split. Game Over. Wont be weighing any this year.
Friday, August 12 View Page
I caulked the blossom end to make me feel better lol.
Friday, August 12 View Page
It's a good size plant and pretty healthy. Maybe I can get something for haloween.

1004 Mohr. There is a set in the left hand corner.

Pollinated 8/3. If it doesnt abort I might be able to at least get something from it.
Friday, August 12 View Page
What's left of the 1004 Mohr plant. I removed about 2/3 of the diseased part, including the main, about 10 days ago. The pumpkin is on one of the seperate secondaries.
Friday, August 12 View Page
Pollination on the 1054 Lawson. I let the vine grow into the soil and started burying the vines about 3 weeks ago. The plant might be big enough now to support a pumpkin. It's now growing where some of the 322 Rahe vines were.
