I'm back in the game and six seeds have been started for the 2008 season. I will start a couple more tomorrow for a friend but I had too few peat pots today. The lineup for 2008 is... 472 Michalec 05 716 Michalec 05* Gotta have green. 852 Mettler 00* Someone has to grow this seed and see what it throws. I thought Gleen might try it but understand it's hard to grow an unknown when there are som many good proven seeds to choose from. This fruit was a giant cantaloupe it may be a crime to let something that ugly reproduce, but it's getting it's chance. 1024 Mombert 03 Why this one hasn't seen more use is a mystery. 1033 Emmons 04 I want another chance with this one and it fits with my genetics project that I'm playing around with. 1061 Pukos 01 Why not? This one hasn't been given a fair trial and needs to be planted before it's too old. Tomorrow I'll start a 975 Summers and 763 Biss for my friend. It's good to be growing again, I hope I can give them the time and effort they deserve.

Finally transplanted to the patch today. Lots of delays this year but after record heat yesterday the soil should be warm and when cloches go up tomorrow they'll be just in time for the return of rain and cool temps until next weekend. Catherine and Molly each have a plant this year and Dad has four. Catherine has the 474 Michalec 05, Molly the 525 Michalec 05, I have the 716 Michalec 05*, 1033 Emmons, 1024 Mombert and 1061 Pukos. There are two other squash that have not germinated yet. If they do one may get a small area to be grown as a pollinator, but otherwise I'll be fine without them. This season should be good for my continued genetics play with a continued line breeding of sorts with the 846 Calai and the 1074 Calai lines. It's late, but better late than never. More work ahead this week.

Monday's storms ripped up the cloche for the 1033 Emmons and broke the plant off at the base. This messes up some of the plans I had for on ongoing genetics project. It also means one less weighoff entry this fall. All plants are still small and shrubby with no vines running yet. This spring has been miserable. So far in June we've set records most days with the lowest daytime high temperatures on record. Add our normal cool nights and wind and rain and I figure I should just stick to cabbage.

Gave up on the patch back in June. Plants seemed a full month behind schedule. I'll harvest a few small pumpkins an a squash. But this season was over for me before summer even started. Maybe next year, maybe not.
