I pollinated the 1634 Rea today with itself. I have another one that will open in a day or two that might be a better option.

I also pollinated the 2350 Gienger with itself today.
Anyone in northern California knows it has been a cool year so far. Plants are not the size we would expect at this time. However, we finally have warm weather on the horizon. Hopefully the sudden heat doesnt shock the plants but either way it is much needed.

First two pumpkins were pollinated 6/26. Hopefully they aren’t the keepers as the plants are still smaller than I’d like. Far plant is the 2350 Gienger, close plant is the 1634 Rea. Patch is 30’ x 50’.

Tissue test results. Going to address low phosphorus, copper and Boron. A great grower gave me some help to put a plan together to remedy the deficiencies.

Photo is from a couple days ago. Just went through a little heat wave. Got some leaf damage but the plants also started to grow faster.

1634 Rea. DAP 11 and DAP 10. Never had two pumpkins so close. Kind of a pain in the ass and need to make the call soon. Chose to dead head the main because it had a split. I will pitch fork the tertiary growth forward to fill in the empty space.

885 Bierle DAP17. This is the “for fun plant” outside the main patch. Doing much better than the 2350 and 1634 which are both extremely heat sensitive. A bit frustrated because I’m still not sure what is going on. Glad I have an A to B comparison though.

However, the 885 does have a stem split that seems to have made contact with the pumpkin. I’ve never had a split on the stem before so I don’t know if this is a big deal or not.

Best shape and color of the patch. Unlikely to have anything very big this year but will be happy to get them to the finish line none the less.

After such a rough year, it’s still fun to have skin in the game. This 2350 Gienger isn’t breaking any records but it is very interesting to look at. Very bright color and weird shape. 20 days left until the weigh off.

We took two pumpkins to the National Pumpkin Weigh-Off at Bishops Pumpkin Farm here in Northern California. It was a great event with 57 entries! Our season was so-so, no PBs this year. But we ended up with some cool bright orange pumpkins and and still took home some money.
Here is the latest YouTube episode that highlights the weigh off.
