Backups all germed in 3 days. Still 100%. This 1072 Weston will probably go in as the primary as the other one is kind of stunted.... We also started a couple of 1180 Westons to plant opposite it. If it doesn't impress, it will get the axe and we will regrow the 1180.

Plant day. The most vigorous roots are on our 924 Weston (1436.5 Liggett x 1150 Weston). This plant was in a 6 inch pot and pushed up dirt on the 26th. All of the rest are similar, but not quite as many.

The 1072 Weston came up but never did much else. I tossed it out this evening instead of planting it and it has 1/10th the roots as the other ones. The backup has popped and is keeping pace with the rest of them, so it will get the promary spot and we have started 2 1180's as a backup for it. It has one more chance before it gets left in the dust.
Saturday, May 4 View Page
Planted the backups today. Still have one spot empty, the 1072 did not make the cut. Both of the ones we started did not start well. It will be replaced by the 1180 and it will be ready to transplant tomorrow or Monday. We are looking forward to regrowing it.

Monday, June 3 View Page
Been a week since last pics, plants are growing well and burying is an every day chore now. This is the 1024 Speakman. Still the longest, this side lost the second side vine in the first wind storm we had, and for some reason the third one grew over to the right instead of this side. But the rest of them are forming correctly, so will let a tertiary grow b ack from the 4th vine and fill in this space.

Tuesday, June 11 View Page
the 1024 Speakman, except for the broken side vine and the one that went to the wrong side, this plant has been very easy to manage and still the longest. We will get lengths when we know where the first pumpkin will fall.
Tuesday, June 11 View Page
This is on the tip of the 924 Weston and will be second in line for pollen. I will say 19th for this one.

The 924 Weston. It may push itself into the lead plant position if it keeps up with the last week's advances.
Tuesday, June 11 View Page
This is the 1381 Checkon tip. Like that shape. I'm going with the 19th for pollination on this one too.
Tuesday, June 11 View Page
1381 Checkon. This is a lower plant and the leaves are a little bit smaller, but it is growing very well and giving the 1024 and 924 a run for their money.

the 1180 Weston is stepping it up. For being started behind, it is doing very well.
Tuesday, June 11 View Page
The 1725 Harp is getting some length on it, but still kind of narrow, and a good bit behind the top 3. I've heard people say they had their best pumpkin on thier worst plant, here's hoping.....lol

Most of the severe weather went north of us. We did get 1.6 inches of rain and the patch is saturated and muddy. The extra wind protection worked and the plants have no damage.

Here are the stats. 1180 Weston -- 8.5 ft long, with 5 ft sides 1725 Harp -- 11 ft long, with one 6 ft side and the other side is 3.5 ft 924 Weston -- 14 ft long with 8 ft sides and a pumpkin at 12 ft 1024 Speakman -- 14 ft long with one 10 ft side and the other side 6 ft and a pumpkin at 12 ft 1381 Checkon -- 15 ft long with 9 ft sides and a pumpkin at 13 ft.

Very small (maybe a mile wide) but strong storm gave us a direct hit today. Trees down all around us. Dropped 1.25 inches of rain on top of the 1.75 we got yesterday. Johnathon's patch and the 1024 Speakman have a row of pine trees between them and the huge soybean field to the southwest of us. They got a few holes in the leaves from very tiny hail. But they are in the lowest part of the plants and have standing water. The 1024 has about 6 or 7 blown over leaves, but only a few look broken. I think the rest of what is blown over will stand backup when the sun comes out tomorrow. The rest of the plants took various damages, with pictures to follow.
Friday, June 28 View Page
The 1180 Weston was the worst damaged had almost every leaf laid on the ground. More than 1/2 of them are broken over. Probably only 20 of them are split open, the rest are just kinked. This picture is after we were propping the leaves backup. I didn't think about taking pics first. About halfway through the process another storm rolled through, so we didn't get finished. I think after the sun comes out tomorrow they will rebound.
Friday, June 28 View Page
The 924 Weston is the next worst one for damage. Many of the down leaves are just blown over, so I think they will stand backup tomorrow when the sun comes out.
Friday, June 28 View Page
the 1725 Harp, again most of the down leaves are just blown over and don't look like they are kinked or broken, so I think it will look much better tomorrow.
Friday, June 28 View Page
The 1381 Checkon has smaller, and shorter leaves, plus it is on the middle of the patch so it gets more protection.

The 1381 Checkon is now 16 days old and over the last 3 days has decided it is time to grow. It's misshaped and we kept trying to get something else set but, Since we don't have another one set for sure, and this one is finally growing at a good rate, we set it up on the Mill cloth and put the shade structure over it before it got to big to pick up. We have about 5 pollinated that are still shiny, 2 of them on the main past this one. Time will tell, but for now this is the one.

Here is the weird side that kept us trying to get something else on this vine.
Thursday, July 4 View Page
The spot that did not grow right in the beginning. It is growing now and not getting worse even though the pumpkin has grown a lot in the last 3 days.
Thursday, July 4 View Page
the 924 Weston at 12 days. It got hit by the Hail we had on Friday, so it has some little pock marks, and the leaf that was shading it scratched the heck out of the top in the high winds that accompanied that hail. But since the storm the plants have all kicked it up a couple of notches and the pumpkin has grown nearly 1/3 in the last 3 days. WShen it got hit by the hail I wasn't sure it would make it, but Teresa never lost faith in it, so we set it on the mill cloth and put a shade over it and it will be the one.

We had another high wind come through. 30 miles north at Columbus airport 71 mph gusts were clocked. Trees down all around us. The extra precautions that we took since last time helped, this time only layed some of the vines over a little nothing looks broken, when the sun comes up tomorrow, they should stand back up. Mother Nature is really being a B this year. The only plant we don't have a good 10 day going is...you guessed it...the 1725 Harp. We do have 3 that look like they have taken, but all less than 10 days old. It's time to get 'r done.

Here are some more detailed pics of the lift ring. This ring was one of the first that Dean made, 2 years ago. It has lifted more than a dozen pumpkins with no problems at all. In addition to the adjustable steel buckles, the way the strap is attached to the ring, the weight of the pumpkin locks the tail end against the lower ring so there is no way it can slip. The heavier the pumpkin the more force is applied to the strap against the ring. The straps on mine are different colors because he was testing the stitching on the different thicknesses of the straps. The new rings all have black straps.

The new rings all have black straps.

a couple of weeks ago we cut the seeds out of the 1312, not a great count, but this is the thickness of the plug we pulled out of the blossom side to get the seeds out. We still wanted to leave it in our display as long as we could. It was well below freezing for several days this week and then when it warmed back up they started getting soft, so we took them all out today.....more pics to follow.

The inside of the stem side. All around the stem was a much darker color. All of the flesh seemed to be really saturated with moister, but the stem seems like maybe it was even more saturated.

The insides of the 1312 was flawless.

Cross section of Johnathon's 568 (985.5 Weston x 1381 Checkon) that won Circleville's Nancy Martin (prettiest pumpkin) Award. This pumpkin was the fastest growing kin in Jun, but the huge rains we had in Jun and Jul pretty much drowned it, and it still made it until now with no rot. This one had the highest seed count out of all of ours this year. Maybe as many as all of the rest put together.
