It is getting to be that time of year again! On Sunday I cut my cover crop.

I spread 21 bags of gypsum to raise my calcium & sulfur levels.

Then I mixed 10 pounds of Pumpkin Pro Mychroazae with 50 pounds of annual rye ad broadcast it around the 1200 square foot patch and tilled it in. I'll let the rye grow as a spring cover crop and currently am planning on tilling it away from my plants as they grow. we'll see how that goes. It is supposed to rain for the next three days, so that should get things started!

In the previous post I said that my patch is 1,200 square feet. It is actually 12,000 square feet. Here is my current projected lineup. I'm sure it will change, probably several times.

Over the weekend I put up the frames for my hot houses. This pic shows one single hot house (on the right) and a double (on the left). In the double sized hot houses I'll be growing two plants back-to-back about 5 feet apart. I haven't grown from the center of my patch for several years, so it should be a good starting point.

My spring cover crop is growing, my first hot house has been warming up for 10 days, and now my Heirloom festival seeds have germinated! I guess this means my season has officially begun.

My patch looks like the world's largest Chia pet as the cover crop of annual rye greens up & starts to get thick. Today my 1446 seeds popped their heads out of their germination pots!

This morning I planted two 1446 Pugh seedlings in their greenhouse. Rootshield, Pumpkin Pro, Kelp Meal, & Companion all made it into the planting hole to insure a good start. I know it doesn't look as good as Pingrey's does, but we'll see if that matters when the Heirloom Festival rolls around!

Either this ladybug is bringing good luck, or it is hungry.

I have a couple halogen work lights that I've put in my hot house to help keep it warm at night. I hope the whole thing doesn't burn down...

My patch is over run with ladybugs! The remains of my winter cover crop that didn't get plowed under is literally crawling with them. I must have had a major hatch in my patch. I brought a few home to eat the aphids off my hybiscus plants. Ladybugs are supposed to bring luck arent they??? I'm due for some luck this year...the good kind of luck would be nice for a change.
