Never could make a culling decision so I just cut off the inner secondary vines and let only one side of secondaries grow so they wouldn't cross. There are only 5 secondaries behind this pumpkin but I continue to grow main. I let them grow on their side in a 1 gallon pot after I removed the 1st leaf until they grew themselves upright. Then I planted the rootball horizontally on top of soil vs vertically in a hole. They each vined a-ok.
