First post of 2012. Well, my plans have changed. I was planning on taking the year off, but I got the bug again lol. Me and Vince are actually tag teaming this year at my house. We had two seperate patches, and we plan on growing one plant that covers both areas to try and really go for it this year. Our seed to be grown, the fruit pictures, my own 980 Fredricks 2011 (1544 Revier x 1610 Lieber) 8% heavy, Gonna go big and orange and grow our own! Excited to see what my seed will do. In the middle of patch prep this coming week, temps i nthe 80's in January, weird warm weather. As always, we'll dedicate the patch to the Good Lord above who allows us to grow every year with His Blessings.

picture of patch a few days ago. I was in the process of spreading out 4 yards of aged manure, under it is a layer of shredded leaves about 2 inches thick.
If you aren't aware, I grow in a mobile home park where a mobile home used to be:) You can see the electrical and water hook up in the middle of the patch. The last 3 years, I have grown on the far end in 400 sq feet, and my friend vince has had his own patch on the other end, both patches together are about 800 sq ft.
For the first time, we decided to co-grow one plant over the whole area. Time to see what the 980 Fredricks 2011 can really do!

I have always had shade issues on my side of the patch, a huge tree blocks the sun until 11 to 11:30 am. The park trimmed the tree for the first time in 5 years, here is a shot of the trimmed tree. Looks like I will get more sun this year!

here is the patch all tilled up and waiting for a couple of months. I put so many shredded leaves in the patch it isn't even funny! The great part about the mobile home park, all of the landscaping guys just bring me leaves from every tree in the park until I say, NO MORE! lol. Probably 30 to 40 trash bags of leaves if I counted.

the picture of the whole patch tilled up. I tilled my side and vince tilled his side, kind of just sharing the work and the plant the whole year. All I can say is, the area looks big compared to what I am used to growing in, 400 sq ft to 800? man, gonna be different!

greetings from the Fredricks! well, it's still a few eeks away from my pumpkin starting so my wifewanted an organic garden in our backyard for food. The funny part is, I have grown huge pumpkins over the last decade, but never grown a regular garden! So I really don't know what I am doing:) So her in the picture is the potato patch. I think it's a spud, yam, sweet potato and some other kind of potato! lol I don't even know if I am starting them right, but I read a online post and we will see what happens.

Have you ever wondered while picking seeds wich one might grow a 1400 lber and which one might grow a 700 lber? And hoping you choose the right one???? lol eeenie, meeenie, minie, moe! Pictures soon.

vince called me last night, all of his 980 fredricks seeds germinated. But our pollinator 1704 urena rotted. So I popped my 1704 into a zip lock baggie and paper towel advanced seed method for an emergency quick start. Let's hope she germinates! My 980 Fredricks seeds are in their pots awaiting their arrival into the world. I pretty much am lazy with no germination box, just stick them outside in the sun during the day and in the house at night. So they take a little longer to come up than if I was babying them:)

980's are growing slowly and healthy so far. Will cut down to 2 plants soon since a couple of them are almost touching. So far they are one of the best plants I have had in the heat. We hit 85 and I left the misters off to see what happens, not even a little wilt. Happt as could be. Hopefully it continues.

Just a note on the 980's up to this point. Seem to be very heat tolerant plants so far. We hit 90 degrees yesterday and I did not mist or shade cloth them yet, not even a hint of wilt and no burn anywhere. Very impressive! Maybe they got a little heat tolerance from last yearm who knows!

yes, the pictures are blury! lol. The lense had a smudge on my wife's cell phone lense. Well, pictures long over due. Ok, here is the story:
Vince and myself are growing together. The Plan: I start 2 980 fredricks, and vince starts two. We put four in the patch and cull to one. So I started my 2 980's and put them abour 12 inches apart since vince was gonna bring over two more and we would have them far away from my seedlings so we could grow them awhile before choosing.
After my plants were in the patch for awhile, vince isn't showing up with the other plants. I assume he is just taking his time to transplant them. Few days later, no vince, no 980's. Telephone call: Hey vince, where are the plants????

Vince's reply: Jim, what plants? Huh? Great team work and communication! lol. All of his 980's were at his house growing or given away, except one. The one that was so ugly that vince wanted to throw it away. It was small, ugly, and the first true leaf came out parallel wit hthe seed leaves and straight up. A ugly duckling for sure. Anyway, I said bring it over, we need a backup! Well, you can guess the story, the previous picture and this one is that 980. Turning out quite nice actually. A little on the smaller side still, but sizing up a little now. It is the front runner now because it seems a little more heat tolerant than the number one plant. All old leaves are fine in heat, but new growth is sensitive on the other 980. The 980 pictured is a little sensitive on new growth too, but a little better.
I will laugh if we end up with this plant and grow a monster off of it and I'll always remind vince he wanted to throw it away.

980 Fredricks is growing strong. We just got a new camera and I am trying to figure out how to get the photos to my diary. Lol. A couple failed attempts so far. Battle is against sow bugs again. And I had an outbreak of aphids on my plant, never ever seen this so early. Hope it's not a sign of things to come. Had catipillars too! Plant looks good, about 6 to 7 feet long main. One of my leaves around the stump just snapped off. Wind I'm assuming? Almost ripped off the vine. Strange for sure. I'll get pictures up when I get it figured out. Jim

surprise, I chose the original number one 980 that was larger and cut the smaller ugly duckling. I went with my gut and the heat tolerance seemed the same as they got older. This plant is very aggressive and large so far. I am really battling the aphids real early like never before. Sprayed organicide twice in a couple days trying to knock them out.
This is a picture of the stump. I covered it with some plastic so it stays dry. I cut out a few leaves around the stump since they were burned a little and had the aphids in that area. I figured they would be cleared anyway soon and with the 800 foot patch this year, no need to worry.

one more view. The vine pattern is my own this year. Vince and I decided to take the main and bend it to the right and have the pumpkin on the outside of the patch. All vines to the left(on the photo) are being bent backwards and running down behind the stump. like spider legs. All vines that will come off of the other side (right side on photo) will just run down straight. Vince got the easy side, I got the bendy hard side! lol

yes, it looks like snow in the patch! Kidding. Me and vince are trying an extreme extermination. we put DE (I think that's the name) it's crushed fossils like shells that are sharp at the microscopic level that kill soft bugs like pill bugs. WE still have an invasion and they like to chew off the tap roots on the secondary vines. We threw up more shade cloth and no misting to keep the powder dry for a couple of days.
The 980 grows very well, but even the tap roots not getting munched seem to grow a few inches and stop. Not sure if the liitle bugs are chewing them off underground too or if the plant just has a tiny root system. I've learned that root system size means nothing. I had plants with huge tap roots grow ok pumpkins, and plants with small roots grow monsters. So who knows at this point. But I wish I saw better root growth going down!!

Vince and myself are each growing half of the plant. We have always competed against one another. In the past, Vince's plant always, and I mean always won for the neat contest. Perfect dirt, plant looks even and uniform. Mine, I use the same method, but it always looks messier and the plant has leaves kind of big but not uniform. one more angle. She has puzzled me with her growth. She slowly walked up to 20 lbs on day 19, then jumped up to 27 lbs day 20. Last 4 days she did 26 lbs respectively. All weight estimates are on old 2003 chart, some bump them up a few lbs if ya want. Never had a fruit have such a high weight gain day 20, but never had a fruit stay even on day 20 through 24. Usually they slowly ramp up through dat 30 or so. No sure if she will go up, stay put or go down early. hhhhmmmmm, time will tell.

day 27 for the 980 fredricks, still chugging along at 30 lbs a day 2012 chart, 249.5 ott, 360 lbs or so. I am ahead of last years fruit by a decent margin so far.
Plant is a beast, main vine is bigger than my arm! lol Leaves are solar panels, and the male flowers are huge! Me and vince were probing the patch and the male flowers stalks are as thick as a newly formed vine! Anyway, not about plant size I know, but it's fun.
Mildew attack is on! Vince sprayed tonight, I will spray monday.
If you have followed my diary for the past few years, you know 400 sq ft plant is all I ever grew the last 4 years. I can see why 800 is better. You have more plant to power the fruit early on, and more healthy leaves later on to power the fruit as well. So I am guessing you get a longer pwer growth cycle and so far I am seeing that. 400 sq ft patch looks old as the pumpkin gets older with no new leaves. I will post pictures soon for fun of all the big stuff and the fruit.

heat and humidity are eating up the plant. Vine rot is getting worse because of it too! I need another 45 days out of the plant, gonna be iffy because of the vine rot!!! We will hit 800 lbs today on day 42. I think it's on track for 1150 to 1200 "if" I can keep the vine together, and that's a big if.

Hey Chris, I think the skin and color will be identical, perfectly smooth, gonna go beautiful! I have never had a smooth skinned fruit like this in all my years growing. This is day 42, 800 lbs. A monster for san diego climate for sure. She has dropped down into the 23 lbs a day range and holding. How long will it hang on? we'll see.

pumpkin has slowed down in the high heat, and we are on the down turn for growth. Final weight will depend on weather, and it has been bad for 11 days or so now. Hoping for atleast 32 more days of slower growth.
on a good note, I was measuring the pumpkin today and it is darn hard to measure the circumference. I found out that I wasn't measuring the widest part lol, so I gained 2 inches instantly on circumference! Funny:) OTT is 348.75 inches on day 48, 930 lbs estimation. The 980 Fredricks which I am growing taped 353 last year when done, so we should pass it up soon! Praying for cooler weather.

good news and bad:
bad: vine is still rotting in various places, badly in one spot. I dried up a bad spot with fan, and another one was found today. I even found a small spot on the stem starting to rot. Definitely have disease in the patch! Holding this thing together with tape and paper clips!!!!!!
Good: growth slowed down to 10 lbs a day, then picked up to over 20 again! 355 ott on day 51. Hitting some historic numbers for san diego. Bigger than last years county record size wise, and approaching my biggest ott ever which I got 359 ott in 2005 with a split fruit. Will pass that number soon. "If" we can keep the vine or stem from rotting, she's gonna be big for this far south. Not sure how long we can keep the vines healthy.

main vine is on life support. Rot dries up with a fan, but when taken off of fan, it returns quickly. If I had 4 fans life would be good! lol I think we can get her to make it another 30 days, but barely. But unfortunately I don't think we can keep the fruit on until the weigh off october 28th, way late for our climate. So not sure if fruit will make it to weigh off, and if it does, it will be off of vine for a looong time:)

smooth skin besides a few stretch marks as it has gotten older where the skin seperates from growth. The top of the fruit is almost red in color, it is closest to the top of the tarp and gets hot and closer to sun. The fruit has been under blue shade and hasn't seen sun yet. The left side of fruit isn't as orange since it's the darkest side. I want to open up the fruit to the sun so it can color up everywhere, but it has been too hot.

99 degrees again today! Will this heat ever give up? The 980 Fredricks seems to be doing ok despite the heat. More historic numbers for san diego for myself and vince. 370 ott day 62, 1104 lbs. We are blowing away anything we have ever seen in san diego. We NEED some cooler temps because this plant is healthy enough to grow the fruit another month with some luck. 90 days is the longest I have ever gotten out of the patch. Whatever happens, it has been another blessed year from our Lord and Savior Jesus. What a blessing just to have a pumpkin. As for the vine and stem rot, we finally have it under control knock knock, for now. Fans going 24/7. Next hope, 1200 lbs!

blossom does not appear to be rotting so far, a good sign. Splits continue to slowly go deeper, deepest pushing an inch inside the fruit, but still sound. safest bet is to cut off the fruit, but vince wants to keep it on. We are rolling the dice for sure! Water has been shut off for two days now, no misting, no watering. Probably won't water again this season. Fruit will still grow since it will take awhile for dirt to dry out. Every day I kind of grimmace before looking at the fruit wondering if it will go through to the cavity. yikes!!! Nerve racking lol The splits occured after we co2 the foliar, must have spurred growth. I think we could have pushed her to 1200, now we just limp to the finish hopefully.

with the season coming to a close, I want to express how thankful I truly am this year. I know we all get pretty excited about pumpkins, but in reality, they don't mean much in the scope of life. I am blessed beyond measure with my wife, son, and family. Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is everything in my life as most of you probably know.
So whether you had the best season ever, or the worst, remember what truly counts in life. How we treat others and how we love people. It's a sad fact that love grows cold these days in many ways and very few people truly try to do what is right in God's eyes. My prayer for everyone of you who have enjoyed my diary this year is that God's blessings would be upon each of you.
If anyone is reading this and you never have had peace or contentment in your heart for "life", you are always welcome to email me, I would love to share how God has changed my life in more ways than I can put into words. Finally, best of luck to everyone as we weigh our fruit! But remember, have fun no matter what, it's just a pumpkin!

fruit on the 980 has stopped in size, 376 ott or so I think. Pumpkin has not gotten much bigger over the last 10 days or so, maybe a little. But the curious part about her is that she is still showing growth splits in the skin and sapping in those cracks. So she is obviously growing somewhere!!! Makes me think she is growing more internal and the sapping and cracks are from growth pressure inside. I'm terrible at knowing if a fruit will go heavy or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if she does go heavy, which would be impressive for the hot summer and heavy new chart. In 5 days we will know!

ok,
I want to explain how this will work. Saturday, 11am, the 980 will get weighed at my house on a certified ground scale for an official weight. With this being a new county record fruit (Well hopefully), I can't risk keeping her on the vine another month with vine rot and a little stem rot. So, we want to play it safe and get it done.
The weigh off is not until oct 28th, way late for this far south. Fruit will be stored at a loca church, and if it lasts, will be taken up to the weigh off. Yes, it will loose a lot of weight probably, but life goes on. It will just be fun to go up if we can.
And, hopefully the famous Chris Dunn (socal) will show up with his wounded 985 monster saturday and get an official private weight on his fruit too. 2 days!

the 1116 has been at the church on display. Sad news! It will not make it up to pumpkinmania weigh off on the 28th. She has gone down to rot on the blossom end. day 65 on the 980 fredricks. The heat is taking it's toll. We have had temps at 100 or high 90's for 90% of the last 30 days. It's just been too hot. Fruit has finally slowed way down. Hoping we ca neak out some small lbs for another couple weeks, but I think 1200 estimation won't happen. If we would have had some luck with the weather, it would have gotten bigger I believe. Looking at our options for when to weigh this thing, pros and cons for the weigh off it late october. I will discuss with vince, but my gut tells me to weigh the fruit around the 1st of october with all of our rot issues, and store it somewhere, hoping it lasts until the weigh off. It would loose a lot of weight, but atleast we get an accurate weighing of the fruit. Time will tell.
